Online Therapy
effective, safe & private …
Research shows that online therapy is as effective as in-person therapy. In many ways, the experience is similar but there are some differences to be aware of. It is recommended that if you require online therapy, you choose a therapist that has undergone specialist training in this area.
There are some things to be mindful of when considering online therapy:
- Is your internet connection good enough?
- If you work from home and use your screen a great deal, would you prefer a separate space for therapy rather than your session being one of several “meetings” that day?
- Is it possible to have a safe and private space in your home? You may well want to talk about very private issues or about other family members and you may feel inhibited if you are concerned they may hear you.
- Sometimes the commute to and from therapy can be an important time to reflect. If it is for you, how will you give yourself time to do this?
There are a number of benefits to having therapy online:
- You can create a comfortable and private space in your own home from which to attend therapy.
- You may enjoy wearing comfortable clothes and bringing a cup of tea to your session.
- You can avoid a commute before and after your therapy session.
- You may have a pet with you that you find comforting.
Creating your Therapy Space
I encourage you to treat the online session as you would an in-person session and implement as many of the same boundaries as possible.
Find a comfortable space with privacy. This could be a comfortable armchair, your office desk, garden, parked car, or your bed. I suggest sitting on something where your back is supported. A comfortable place to sit is even more important if we are doing hypnotherapy.
You may wish to put a note on the door of the room requesting that other people do not disturb you except in an emergency. I encourage you to use headphones or earphones. This keeps the content of our sessions private and improves sound quality and also minimises distractions.
Close other applications or browser windows on your device and put your phone on silent or turn it off, as we do in person. You’re welcome to bring water or a cup of tea or coffee to your session but please avoid alcohol and drugs prior to and during the session and please don’t smoke or vape during the session.
Give yourself time afterwards to process the session before re-joining your family, working or making other calls.
I am a certified therapist in online therapy. If you want to chat through if online therapy is for you, please get in touch.
